Gulls come from behind to snatch late winner
Western Morning News
|August 26, 2025
TORQUAY United were forced to work hard for all three points at Plainmoor yesterday afternoon - but an 89th minute winner by Matt Jay sent Dover Athletic packing and the Gulls up to second in the National League South table.

After conceding a late goal at Horsham which denied them a share of the points there on Saturday, it was Torquay’s turn to grab a late winner in front of three and a half thousand fans on a really hot day.
The Gulls went behind to an Alfie Matthews free-kick in the 20th minute and from then on the referee was the most unpopular man on the field. But he gave Torquay a penalty and Cody Cooke made it 1-1.
In the second half, Matthews made it 2-1 to Dover from the penalty spot, but a superb goal by Jordan Young pulled the game level - and substitute Jay struck as the game moved into injury time.
There were two changes from the team that started the 2-1 defeat at Horsham. Louis Dennis was fit enough to start and replaced Matt Jay up front, while Ed Palmer started ahead of Jordan Dyer. There was a home debut for left winger Josh Phillips.
