WALES SKIPPER AT CENTRE OF WINNING TRY DEBATE
Western Mail
|July 28, 2025
THE British and Irish Lions have claimed a series win against Australia - but it has come with a certain level of controversy, centring around Wales skipper Jac Morgan
Farrell's side secured the series win with seconds to spare through Hugo Keenan's try.
But in the lead-up to the final passage of play, Morgan’s clearout of Carlo Tizzano stirred up a heated debate, with many of a golden persuasion crying fowl.
The match officials reviewed the footage, which saw Tizzano fall back to the turf after contact in quite dramatic fashion, and the whole of the MCG held its breath before the Lions and Morgan were able to celebrate with gusto with the series wrapped up.
Speaking on Stan Sports, former Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper was adamant, saying the clearout was at least a penalty and the final try should have been disallowed as a result.
“I can see what the referee is saying but there’s a penalty there,’ he said. “Whether it’s on head, on neck or going straight off his feet to the ground.
“1 would say if that is minute one, that’s a penalty.”
Former Australia centre Morgan Turinui agreed in even more strenuous terms, saying referee Andrea Piardi should come out and explain himself.
“The problem is the last one shouldn't be a try,” he told Stan Sport. “It’s really simple. It’s a point of law where dangerous conduct in a ruck and maul.
“You cannot make contact with a player above the shoulder line at a ruck or maul. The referee said it was a dynamic incident with both players arriving.
