High Court blocks poultry megafarm

PLANS for farm buildings that could hold 200,000 chickens in Shropshire have been blocked after the High Court overturned planning permission.
Researcher Alison Caffyn brought legal action against Shropshire Council over plans to build four poultry buildings on a nine-hectare site at Felton Butler, near Shrewsbury after planning permission was granted in May 2024.
The ruling comes amid increasing concern over the levels of phosphate pollutant in the rivers Severn, Wye and Usk. Phosphates, found in chicken manure can be harmful to river wildlife.
Some figures suggest that 50 million chickens are being farmed at any one time in the Wye and Severn catchment areas.
At a two-day hearing beginning in April, the High Court in Cardiff was told that the "indirect effects" of spreading manure produced by the chickens should have been assessed.
