The plants here all belong to the lamiales order, which includes many of our culinary herbs and aromatic shrubs. What struck me is how this bed tells a story of scientific change: the grouping was radically redefined with the advent of DNA sequencing, showing genetic connections that weren't obvious just by looking.
Then there are the gentianales and boraginales beds. The gentianales include the coffee family (rubiaceae), which I found in the glasshouses - always a thrill to see coffee as a real, living shrub rather than just a morning ritual. The boraginales bed is home to the borage family, whose botanical status has shifted over time. It’s now understood to be closely related to gentianales - another reminder of how science continues to evolve our understanding
