Kali Puja in West Midnapore: 335 years of rituals and togetherness

The Statesman Delhi

October 19, 2025

The story of this Kali Puja began more than 335 years ago. The Saborno Roy Chowdhury family, one of the oldest aristocratic lineages of Bengal, started this grand celebration in their ancestral village of Kheput in West Midnapore.

- DEBROOP BANERJEE

Their forefather, Ramdulal Roy Chowdhury, once visited the Kali temple at Kalighat in Kolkata. It was their family land at the time. Deeply moved by the experience, he decided to bring the Puja to other parts of Bengal so that more people could worship the Goddess. Since then, the tradition has continued unbroken through generations.

During Kali Puja, Kheput transforms itself into a village of light and sound. The air is loaded with the scent of flowers and incense. People gather in joy and faith. Every home plays a part, and every corner feels alive with devotion.

Every corner tells a story of faith and tradition. This is where the Saborno Roy Chowdhury family celebrates Kali Puja, a tradition that has lasted for generations.

Our Invisible Self ~I

Any posture which keeps the spine erect is said to be good for meditation, according to Patanjali. By penetrating the third eye or concentrating at the space between our eyebrows, we can dive deep inside ourselves and experience the Divine. By doing so, we can also develop our intuitional capacity or the sixth sense. When the fog of ignorance is removed by meditation, we see the right path and see God. God is immanent in the infinite bounties and beauties of creation. If we stay tied to the mundane and the finite, we cannot move towards the infinite God
