Council set to spend £60k helping asylum seekers beat language barrier

Money to fund courses that will enable newcomers 'to integrate more quickly'
STOKE-ON-TRENT City Council is using £60,000 of Government funding to provide extra learning courses for asylum seekers due to high demand.
The courses support learners with communication, reading and writing, and teach computer skills and show them how to apply for jobs online.
There are 1,044 asylum seekers living in dispersed accommodation in the city, the Home Office says, with an extra 267 people living in the Best Western Hotel.
Last year the city council received £1.4m from the Home Office Full Dispersal Grant based on the number of asylum seekers in dispersed and interim accommodation.
