US band Culture Wars' newest single born from frontman's 'nasty breakup'

A "nasty breakup" led Culture Wars frontman Alex Dugan to pen the band's latest single, Lies, which explores the pain of betrayal and the deceit of a dishonest partner.

Lies is a follow-up to the Austin-based alt-rock band's hit Typical Ways, which has garnered over five million Spotify streams and counting.

"It was kind of a defining breakup that the song is about defining for my life. It certainly gave me plenty of emotion, and obviously the song has become very personal to me," he told The STAR in an exclusive virtual chat.

"Even now, it still kind of brings something out when we play it live. But it's a song that's kind of stuck around for a little while for us and so we're very happy to finally put it out in this form for the album."

Fueled by a college breakup, Alex wrote Lies a handful of years ago. Sonically, the anthemic track has evolved significantly since then.

"We wanted to make it fit the band because now the band has kind of found its sound and found it's kind of what we're going for. And so now we're like, 'How do we translate that?' Because we know the underlying song, the melody and the chorus are really catchy," he mused.
