Gujarat HC dismisses plea against UCC panel over minority exclusion

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition challenging the composition of the government-appointed five-member committee to assess the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Gujarat and rejected allegations of the exclusion of minority community members from the committee.
The plea, filed by Surat resident Abdul Vahab Sopariwala, argued that the absence of representation from religious minorities on the panel violated constitutional provisions, particularly Articles 14, 15, and 25, which ensure equality, and freedom of religion. The bench headed by Justice Niral S Mehta summarily rejected the plea.
