Mayurbhanj records average rainfall of 100.49 mm, Balasore receives 22 mm
HEAVY rainfall induced by a depression in the Bay of Bengal triggered flood-like conditions in three blocks each in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts.
Mayurbhanj district recorded an average rainfall of 100.49 mm, while Balasore received 22 mm in the 24 hours ending Saturday morning.
Due to the incessant downpour, communication between both districts via Udala and Kaptipada in Mayurbhanj remained disrupted for the second consecutive day.
Water from the Deo river overtopped the road and a bridge at Saikhunta-Kaisari stretch. The situation worsened after torrential rainfall in the Similipal Biosphere Reserve led to excessive inflow into the river.
Flood in Deo river submerged at least five villages in Udala. In Moroda and Rasgovindpur blocks, around 20 villages were inundated, with over 200 acre of farmland submerged. An embankment of Jambhira river was washed away in the flood. Communication in several low-lying villages was cut off since Friday afternoon.
