Coastal towns bear the brunt as heavy rain batters Uttara Kannada

HEAVY rainfall continued to batter Uttara Kannada district with the coastal towns of Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar and Bhatkal being severely affected.
Karwar recorded the highest rainfall at 200 mm. Heavy rains lashed Karwar causing flooding in ground floors of several apartments and more than 20 parked cars were submerged in water. Normal life was thrown out of gear in the coastal region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for the district for three days on Wednesday.
Water gushed into several roadside shops and hundreds of chickens stocked in a shop died. The municipality staff and fire and emergency service personnel have been deployed. Residents of apartments were seen pumping water out.
