3,000 sign petition over university's big job cuts

A UNION petition calling for an end to Newcastle University job cuts has reached over 3,000 signatures.

As industrial action against job cuts continues among unionised Newcastle University academics, the University and College Union’s public petition calling for an end to job losses has amassed 3,183 names.

As of May 10, 257 members of staff had taken voluntary severance.

However the union is protesting to university bosses over the prospect of a further 38 academic posts being lost. The cuts form part of the university's aim to cut £20m from its wage bill, equating to around 5%.
