Met police face fresh inquiry on tackling bigotry

The Metropolitan police service is to face a new inquiry into whether it has radically changed after a devastating report found it riddled with prejudice and failing the public, the Guardian has learned.

The so-called Casey 2 inquiry has been delayed and was supposed to have been launched earlier this year.

It is supposed to be a followup to the review by Louise Casey which in 2023 found the Met to be institutionally racist and misogynistic. It concluded that Britain's largest police force could be broken up if it could not reform.

The new inquiry will be chaired by Gillian Fairfield, the chair of the Disclosure and Barring Service. She has some experience of policing issues, having carried out a review for the last government into the effectiveness of the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Her appointment is expected to be officially announced this month and was made by the Met and the London mayor Sadiq Khan's mayoral office for policing and crime, which has presided over the Met's repeated crises.
