CLEVELAND'S impressive new Kittiwake Tower, which has been erected at Hartlepool, seems slow to take off.

The tower did not appear to have any nesting kittiwakes on its many ledges when I took a close look last week.
That's despite the fact that possibly more than 100 kittiwake nests are already occupied in the area, notably in the streets very close to the centre of Hartlepool Headland and also at the Lifeboat Station.
This superb photo of one of this year's kittiwake nesters, which has selected a site on the side of what I believe is a former bank, was taken by Brian Nunn.
It's fabulous that we have so many kittiwake nests in our area because this oceanic seabird is on the red list of threatened species. There has been a steep decline in numbers in recent years.
