CJI Surya Kant urges stronger representation of women in courts

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Sunday said the progress of women in the legal profession has been achieved through decades of perseverance and competence.
Speaking at the first National Conference of Indian Women in Law titled 'Half the Nation - Half the Bench' at the Supreme Court of India, the CJI said that barely a century ago women were not even allowed to practise law under the colonial regime.
The conference was organised by Senior Advocates Shobha Gupta and Mahalakshmi Pavani.
The CJI recalled the words of former Supreme Court judge M. Fathima Beevi, who had said in 1989 that she had “opened the door” for women in the judiciary.
