Women's Reservation Bill boosts gender parity, development

The Business Guardian

September 29, 2023

As discussions surrounding the Women's Reservation Bill in India reverberate through the country's political landscape, it raises pertinent questions about the representation of women in politics, both in India and on a global scale.

Women's Reservation Bill boosts gender parity, development

Globally, the underrepresentation of women in politics remains a persistent issue. Despite women constituting nearly half of the world's population, their participation in political processes continues to be disproportionately low, with only about 24 percent of parliamentary seats held by women worldwide. This glaring gender imbalance underscores systemic barriers that hinder women's full political engagement.

Several nations, however, have set examples of gender parity in political leadership. Countries like Iceland, Sweden, and Rwanda have demonstrated that achieving gender balance in political representation is not only feasible but also highly successful. Rwanda, in particular, stands out with over 60 percent of parliamentary seats held by women, marking a significant milestone.
