Paul Doyle, 54, was allegedly behind the wheel of a Ford Galaxy Titanium when it struck a crowd, including two babies and six other children, in the city centre on May 26.

Doyle, of Croxteth, Merseyside, denies 31 charges including nine counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, 17 of attempted GBH with intent and three of wounding with intent.

But at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday he broke down in tears as he was asked to confirm his name.

Then he held his head in his hands as jurors filled in.

The former Royal Marine Commando also faces ‘one charge of dangerous driving and one of affray.

The charges relate to 29 people aged between six months and 78 years.
