Roads, residential areas flooded as Monsoon arrives
-
At least one person was killed and six others injured after a portion of the roof of the Delhi Airport's busy domestic Terminal-1 came crashing down on cars amid a heavy downpour on Friday morning.
All flights from the terminal T-1, scheduled till 2 pm, were cancelled, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said after inspecting the airport. Officials said the roof sheet and the supporting beams collapsed, damaging four cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal. Later in the day, Delhi Airport said that operations from Terminal 1 have been suspended indefinitely.
Heavy rain devastated several parts of the national Capital, bringing the bustling mega city to its knees, and many parts of the city were inundated with water entering homes, submerging vehicles and leading to miles-long traffic snarls.
Key tunnels, including the latest one at Pragati Maidan, were closed and reports of homes being flooded came in from across the city, including the upscale areas of Hauz Khas, Green Park, Gulmohar Park, South Extension and Mayur Vihar on the very first day of heavy rain.Delhi recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall on Friday, the highest since 1936 for the month of June, and the weatherman predicted more spells over the weekend in the national capital.
