Bangladesh is set to witness a significant political shift as Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus prepares to take oath as the head of the country’s interim government on Thursday.
The development comes in the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and subsequent departure from the country, following intense anti-government protests led by the Students Against Discrimination movement.
Army chief Gen Waker Uz-Zaman announced that the swearing-in ceremony for the interim government will take place around 8 pm on Thursday.
The advisory council, which will support Yunus, is expected to comprise 15 members. Gen Zaman assured that the armed forces would provide full support to the 84-year-old economist as he assumes this crucial role during a turbulent period in Bangladesh’s history.
Yunus, currently in Paris and en route to Dhaka, has made a fervent appeal for calm and non-violence. In a statement, he congratulated the “brave students” who spearheaded what he termed “our Second Victory Day.”
