Energy planning now at risk from delayed projects

Amid ongoing investigation into alleged government irregularities and “ghost” projects, the Department of Energy (DOE) assured that it closely monitors the private sector to ensure that power projects are properly executed and delivered as planned.

In an ambush interview on Monday, Dec. 1, Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said that agency-approved projects by private developers are being closely overseen and may face penalties if they fail to meet their committed plans and timelines.

“We are the policymakers who allow them and make sure that they invest, and, of course, our responsibility is that they do perform their commitments. So that’s what we’re watching for. They will invest, but we want to make sure that whoever gives us the permit, then they deliver what they committed,” she said on the sidelines of national energy consciousness month celebrations.

Garin stressed that any projects that go beyond their agreed-upon schedule, or are unable to pursue construction as planned, will have significant effects on the country’s energy goals and security.
