Irish Daily Star
|November 29, 2025
THIS week saw America celebrate Thanksgiving but what is it all about? Here's all you need to know...
-
THE first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 when the Pilgrim Fathers gave thanks for their first bountiful harvest in Plymouth Rock in what is now Massachusetts.
The settlers had arrived in November 1620 and founded the first permanent English settlement in the New England region.
There was no pumpkin pie at the first Thanksgiving: The 1621 dinner featured venison, shellfish, lobster and other seafood.
The original 1621 harvest festival celebration lasted for three days. The pilgrims were joined by about 90 of the Wampanoag tribe and their leader Massasoit.
