Prez should represent all citizens

THE President of Ireland is meant to represent all Irish citizens, at home and abroad, but thousands of us are excluded from doing our civic duty to select the next head of state.

Ireland, as always, is lagging behind the times and overseas voters can't vote by postal ballot or online.

Hardly surprising given our citizens north of the border can stand in the election but cannot vote in it.

And that the poor choices of candidates in this two-horse race wouldn't inspire you to cast a vote.

But having the option to vote taken away after Ireland's rebel leaders died for the Free State and suffragettes campaigned for the right to vote doesn't sit well in our democratic nation.
