But officer fears 15% cut to soldier numbers

Sources have told us the Defence Forces and Department of Defence are trying to make sure Lt Col Lennon's battalion will have the vital full complement to fulfil its mission - but that was not guaranteed.

It's understood that one possibility being examined is that the Irish government will put its hand in its own pocket to finance the shortfall.

The blue beret peacekeepers are paid out of UN funds - but a plan under consideration would see the Irish government pay for the approximately 50 soldier gap.

That would mean, however, they would not be eligible to wear the famous blue berets - and would have to wear black or green Irish gear.

Nor would they be eligible for UN medals given to every member of the Defence Forces who goes on such a peace mission.

But sources said it was more important that the battalion would have the full complement of personnel.
