SUELLA TO QUIZ MET CHIEF ON 'JIHADI' CHANTS AT RALLY
Daily Express
|October 23, 2023
SUELLA Braverman will today demand answers on why the Met did not arrest protesters chanting "jihad" at a pro-Palestine march.
She will tell its boss Sir Mark Rowley "there can be no place for incitement to hatred or violence" amid rising fury over the police's handling of weekend rallies in London.
The Met claimed no offences had taken place, because jihad has "a number of meanings".
But immigration minister Robert Jenrick said that the chant was "inciting terrorist violence and it needs to be tackled with the full force of the law".
A source close to Mrs Braverman said last night: "The Home Secretary is already due to meet the Metropolitan Police commissioner...to discuss the ongoing Israel-Gaza protests and will be asking for an explanation.
"The police are urged to crack down on anyone breaking the law." Tory MP Mark Jenkinson said: "I didn't think the Metropolitan Police could make their handling of this any worse. I was wrong." David Videcette, an ex-counterterrorism officer who was involved in the probe into the 7/7 bombings, said: "It's just crazy that they are allowed to say this in a sanctioned, public demonstration on the streets of London. There is no difference to what jihad means here.
"The issue I have with the police response is the superficial nature of their investigation.
"It's been done remotely, sitting in a nice warm office, without any physical intervention.
"It's impossible to prove what the intent of these people was when saying these things, particularly in relation to calling for jihad against Israel by other Muslims.
