As the tricolour prepares to rise again over the Red Fort on August 15, the nation will mark its 79th Independence Day celebration—a symbolic nod not just to India's past struggles, but also to its future aspirations. While there's often confusion about whether this is the 78th or 79th celebration, the math is clear: India gained independence in 1947, and counting each August 15 as a milestone, this year marks the 79th ceremonial observance—not just the number of years completed.
But 2025's celebration is more than just a commemoration—it's a reflection of transformation. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Indian Armed Forces, which have undergone a dramatic shift in recent years, embracing cutting-edge technologies, increasing self-reliance, and responding proactively to new-age warfare.
A New Battlefield, A New Doctrine Modern warfare has evolved far beyond tanks and trenches. Today, India's defence strategy is shaped as much by algorithms as by ammunition. Lt Gen Rahul R Singh, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Capability Development & Sustenance), has articulated this new reality in stark terms: "The future of warfare is as much cognitive and cyber as it is kinetic."
With this backdrop, the Indian Armed Forces are transforming—strategically, structurally, and technologically.
At the heart of this transformation lies an ambitious push for unmanned aerial systems, indigenous drone frameworks, autonomous combat platforms, and multi-domain readiness. Recognizing drones as a pivotal tool in both civilian and combat scenarios, the Indian Army is fast-tracking its integration into active service. A comprehensive drone policy, due to be released later this year, will encourage Make in India initiatives, improve testing infrastructure, and safeguard against vulnerabilities in critical systems.
