New Liveable Neighbourhood Early plans for second traffic trial revealed
Bristol Post
|September 08, 2025
EARLY designs for the new South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood have been revealed including parking bans and one-way streets. Bristol City Council has published its early plans for a raft of transport changes across Totterdown, Windmill Hill, Bedminster and Southville.
The liveable neighbourhood trial is bound to be controversial with many new restrictions on drivers, but bonuses for people walking and cycling. This is the second liveable neighbourhood in Bristol, following the first trial in Barton Hill, Redfield and St George that has already started.
The council is consulting the public about its early designs for the South Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood until October 30. This feedback will then help transport planners go back to the drawing board before the final designs are installed, likely to be during late 2026 or 2027.
Green Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of the transport policy committee, said: "The proposals we are putting forward aim to make South Bristol a safer and healthier place to live, with quiet streets that are less congested and polluted. They would make it easier to travel by bus, walk and cycle, with a particular focus on making sure children can get to school safely.
"These proposals would still see all areas of the neighbourhoods accessible for motorised vehicles and Blue Badge holders, but routes may change. We recognise that the topic of liveable neighbourhoods generate strong and differing views. While some welcome the changes, others have concerns about how liveable neighbourhoods might affect daily life.
