Housing Plan to turn former pub in East Street into 16-bed HMP

T was once one of South Bristol’s biggest pubs, but now developers have submitted a plan to turn The Assembly in Bedminster into a small shop at the front with a shared house for 16 people built behind it.
The plan has been submitted directly to the Government's planning inspectors, because Bristol City Council is taking too long to decide on applications.
The owners of the Assembly want to keep a smaller commercial unit at what was the front part of the pub on East Street in Bedminster, but demolish the rest of the buildings behind. The Assembly, which was once a thriving pub at the heart of the East Street community, closed in 2021 and, after a short and unsuccessful stint as a nightclub bar called ‘Cheekies’ in early 2022; has been shut ever since and was put on the market in 2023 and 2024.
