A little over two years after the Narendra Modi government announced the revamp of Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram, it is ready with the first blueprint of the redevelopment plan. On March 12—94 years to the day of the launch of Gandhi’s Dandi March, which he had led from this ashram—Prime Minister Modi unveiled the master plan for the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development Project in Ahmedabad, and inaugurated a redeveloped Kochrab Ashram, which had served as the Mahatma’s first residence in the city on his return to India from South Africa in 1915. Gandhi had moved to the ashram on the banks of the Sabarmati river in 1917.
