I wake up to rest my gaze on the impossibly blue, unending stretches of water, parting the flowy, muslin curtains. As I saunter into my breezy balcony, happily swaying palm trees swish their leaves, and sunshine dances on azure waters, making the surface shimmer in a wild spangle of golden streaks. A brightly coloured parasail bobs against the cornflower blue skies, the gurgle of laughter and the strains of a guitar float from the private beach to play against my ears... It's a dreamy place, and I could keep drinking in the spill of sunshine, blues and greens all around me, for a lifetime. A feeling that marked my welcome to the elegant, oceanfront luxury property, The Residence, in Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean.

My first trip to the island nation and I am floored by the colonial-coiffured expanse of the white, colonnaded hotel, lined by 25 acres of lush tropical gardens. The lobby forms the heartbeat of the property, marked by the signature wind corridor, with bobbing palms and a lagoon-style pool cupping my first view of the beach.
