Akinde partnership pays off
GILLINGHAM striker Vadaine Oliver is in the form of his life and he credits one man for his turnaround in front of goal – strike partner John Akinde.
Oliver bagged four goals in three games prior to yesterday’s trip to Doncaster, helping to maintain the Gills’ fine league form that started with an unbeaten November and carried on with wins against Bristol Rovers and Swindon.
Oliver scored three times in those two games to fuel a run that has given Steve Evans’ side reason to start looking up the league rather than over their shoulder as they creep into the top half.
With his top scorer, 25-year-old midfielder Jordan Graham, nursing a hamstring injury, Evans has turned to experienced target man Akinde in order to keep the Gills firing.
Though the 31-year-old isn’t hitting the net regularly, his presence has allowed fellow big man Oliver to thrive.
“The reason I’m getting as many chances and goals is because I’m playing with John,” said Oliver.
