FLORENCE WILLIAMS had conversations with Saracens head coach Alex Austerberry last summer about joining the Premier 15s champions, but she decided to stay at Wasps. She had played for the side since 2018 and was “pretty settled”.
Then Wasps went into administration in October and a consortium bid was accepted that only included the men’s team and youth academy. With the uncertainty around the club and Williams wanting to focus on her rugby, she agreed to move to Saracens. The signing was announced in November.
“It was a tough decision to go because a lot of those team-mates are good friends,” the fly-half says. “I discussed it with my team-mates more than with my coaches, so they could understand why it was and I wasn’t jumping ship. I’m 28. I only have so many years of my career left and if I stayed I would not be doing it for myself but to help the team.
