UAVS enhance the operational capabilities of air defence systems significantly beyond conventional boundaries. ANANT BHALOTIA, Founder and CEO, Anadrone Systems Pvt Ltd, outlines the exciting possibilities
India's defence architecture is entering a decisive phase where unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)— more commonly known as drones— have become indispensable to national security and humanitarian operations. Once considered niche assets, UAVs now function as force multipliers, risk reducers, and resilience enablers. Their evolution from surveillance tools to fully integrated combat, training, and logistics platforms signals a paradigm shift in how nations prepare for and execute missions.
Force Multipliers in Modern Air Defence
In today’s contested skies, UAVs extend the operational reach of air defence systems far beyond traditional limits. By delivering real-time surveillance, reconnaissance, and tactical strike capabilities, they allow commanders to maintain situational awareness across sensitive zones.
The Indian Air Force has begun experimenting with swarm drones— agile, networked units capable of overwhelming enemy defences while carrying out precision strikes. These swarms act as distributed sensors and attack units, augmenting the effectiveness of fighter jets by detecting threats early and engaging multiple targets simultaneously. Beyond operational advantage, such swarms can create confusion and disruption in adversary decision-making, forcing rapid, high-stakes responses.
Complementing this evolution is the adoption of autonomous control systems such as integrated Air Defence Control Systems, which incorporate UAVs into multilayered defensive networks. These systems strengthen India’s readiness to detect, track, and neutralise aerial threats while reinforcing strategic deterrence.
The Role of Target Drones in Training & Systems Validation
A critical component of strengthening air defence effectiveness is the use of target drones. These platforms provide realistic threat simulations essential for testing, training, and validating personnel and hardware.

HOW INDIA'S AIR POWER IS SHAPING THE NEXT ERA OF TECHNOLOGY AND SELF-RELIANCE
Rolls-Royce has been involved with the IAF (then the Royal Indian Air Force) since 1933, when the Bristol Jupiter engines powered the Westland Wapiti, marking the first aircraft of the IAF's No. 1 Squadron. Since that time, we have consistently collaborated with India to enhance its air power. ABHISHEK SINGH, Senior Vice President (India and South East Asia, Business Development & Future Programmes (Defence), writes about this chequered association
