Mil-lets farmers cash in on nutritional value
The New Indian Express|November 27, 2022
IF you travel through the lush green fields in Perambalur, millets hold you spellbind. The millet district, which switched from ragi, kodo, sorghum, and pearl to cash crops such as maize and cotton amid mounting losses nearly two decades ago, is crooning the glory of millets once again.

Mil-lets farmers cash in on nutritional value

So, what has made farmers in the region now swear by these small-seeded grasses? A farmer producers' organisation (FPO) from Veppur has been buying millets from farmers at 8-10 above market price, making it a win-win deal for everyone. Since 2020, Nammalvar Iyarkkai Siruthaniya Uzhavar Urpathiyaalar Kuzhu, an FPO, has been buying millets from farmers with the help of the government and a nongovernmental organisation, Barefoot Academy of Governance. They process the produce and sell it as seeds, rice, and grains. This has motivated several farmers to return to millet crops here.
