Jasmine turns 'gold' ahead of Pongal, prices touch record high of ₹12,000/kg in Madurai markets

IN an unprecedented spike, jasmine prices in Madurai soared to a record high of ₹9,000 to ₹12,000 per kilogram on Friday, leaving traders and consumers in shock.
The surge in Jasmine prices have forced traders to display only limited quantities for sale at the Mattuthavani flower market in Madurai I KK SUNDAR

The surge is being attributed to a drastic fall in supply, triggered by unfavourable weather conditions, particularly persistent humidity and fog, which have severely affected flower yields across the region.
Traders said the current rates are the highest ever recorded in Tamil Nadu. In comparison, the previous peak was in 2018, when jasmine prices reached ₹8,500 per kg. "This year, prices have crossed all previous records and jasmine was sold at ₹10,000 to ₹12,000 in Usilampatti market," said SS Rajapandi, a trader from the Usilampatti flower market.
