WHILE howdah elephant Abhimanyu holds the distinction of being the longest-serving member of the Dasara jumbo squad, a one-year-old pigeon, also named Abhimanyu, has made headlines by becoming the youngest pigeon to fly 1,790 km from Delhi to Mandya in just 52 days.
This remarkable feat was part of the Delhi Race, organised by the Karnataka Homing Pigeon Federation. A total of 22 pigeons from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu took part in the race. All the birds were flown to Delhi, where they were tagged with identification rings indicating their number and year, before being released on April 5.
Abhimanyu, owned by Sridhar R, a car driver working in KNS real estate company and resident of VC Farm in Mandya, successfully completed the journey and returned home on May 28, covering the entire distance in search of his owner.
