Ms Tsai will commence her high-profile trip to the Americas on Wednesday. She is expected to meet US House speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles. Her upcoming travels have been criticised by China, with Beijing condemning Washington for allowing Ms Tsai to visit the country. However, her visit to the US is technically only a transit.
Taipei has been pushing to bolster diplomatic ties with likeminded democracies in the face of China's growing aggression, as Beijing considers the island to be a part of its national territory, even though Taiwan has been self-ruled since it split from the mainland in 1949.
