Hundreds feared dead as 'unprecedented' landslide hits village in Papua New Guinea

Aimos Akem, an MP for Enga province, said the landslide struck Yambali, a village about two hours' drive from the provincial capital, Wabag, early yesterday. Yambali sits along a road leading from the capital that is now blocked, hampering relief efforts.

"From reports gathered on the ground, the landslide buried more than 300 people and 1,182 houses," Akem said.

National authorities have yet to give an official death toll from the landslide. Early estimates had put it at about 100.

The chief of the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Papua New Guinea, Serhan Aktoprak, said the area affected covered the size of three to four football fields, and that the village is home to 3,895 people. He said some houses were spared, but the total number of casualties was not yet known.
