In a major shakeup in the police top brass in Manipur, Rajiv Singh, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Tripura cadre, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for the north-eastern state.
The move is seen as a confidence-building measure by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to balance the local factors by bringing in a non-tribal, non-Meitei police chief.
The government issued the transfer order even as the state is struggling to control the ethnic crisis that has worsened since the first eruption on May 3-4. The order comes a day after the legal fraternity in the state staged a demonstration demanding action against top police officials. The ongoing crisis in the state is being blamed on significant lapses in security and intelligence.
