Nearly 500,000 tonnes of garbage piled up along Munak Canal, clean-up drive planned

Nearly 500,000 metric tonnes of garbage have accumulated along the banks of the 25-kilometre stretch of the Munak Canal in Delhi over the years, officials said on Monday, highlighting an alarming environmental and civic challenge that the government is now moving to address.

According to officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department, the authorities plan to rope in a private contractor for the large-scale cleanup operation. The immediate target is the removal of 48,782 metric tonnes of garbage, which consists largely of silt and municipal solid waste that has clogged parts of the canal’s embankments.

“The contractor will be tasked not only with cleaning all the accumulated waste along the canal banks but also with ensuring safe transportation and transfer of the material to designated landfill sites. A tender has already been floated for the execution of this work,” an official explained.
