THE NOTTS MAN WHO IS HELPING TO SAFELY EVACUATE UKRAINIAN CIVILIANS FROM THE FRONT LINE

- By LOUIS CORBETT

'Everybody I've worked with has had a near-death experience'

“IT'S only a matter of time until we experience a near miss. Just last year, a lad called Eddie was hit and lost his arm and leg”.

Sam Clare, 33, from Underwood, was describing his day-to-day worries while living and working to evacuate vulnerable Ukrainian citizens from the frontline.

Mr Clare and his team are on a mission to evacuate vulnerable people from the frontlines of the Ukraine-Russia war that began in February 2022.

They have already evacuated hundreds from the frontline, often venturing to the most dangerous parts of the warzone - or “no-go zones” - to help those in need.

Mr Clare spoke to the Post from a parked car in Kyiv as he watched the smoke rise from a recent artillery strike. “They hit it hard last night,” he said, as he watched the black plumes fill the skies.

From dodging drones to narrow escapes with artillery, Mr Clare’s work with the nonprofit organisation Isaiah 16:8 is far from safe. He and his team have been operating through GoFundMe pages, with each of the three team members separately collecting cash to fund their next missions east to the front-line.
