Fire fears as market building left empty

CONCERN is growing in a South Wales community that their once bustling indoor market has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour, disrupting residents and business owners through continuous vandalism.

The latest incident was on the evening of April 21, when it is claimed a group of children climbed into the empty buildings behind the old market, and set fire to the inside.

At around 6pm that evening, the roads around the old market were closed for two hours as the fire service extinguishing the fire, and those responsible fled the scene.

Local residents say this anti-social behaviour is frequent, and that the streets are plagued with kids smashing windows, starting fires, and leaving a mess they then have to deal with.

Caerphilly’s indoor market closed its doors in January 2023, and Dewi Graham, a man who lives next to the building, says it has since become a hub for anti-social behaviour.
