Five key issues Ireland will focus on at summit

- TAOISEACH Micheal Martin is

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin is in Brazil this week to attend a gathering of world leaders in advance of the COP30 climate summit.

He will be among 60 heads of state and government that will address the United Nations conference today and tomorrow in the host city of Belem.

The summit will kick off on November 10, with Minister of State for International Development Neale Richmond attending for two days of main talks.

Climate Minister Darragh O’Brien will travel for the final week, known as the political week.

It's the 30th year of the Conference of the Parties, the UN’s supreme decision-making body for climate change.

Here are five areas that the Irish delegation will be focusing on during COP30...

Implementation:

This year's conference will see a focus on implementing previously decided goals.

This includes the Paris Agreement, as it marks 15 years since the treaty was adopted by 196 parties at COP21. Its goal is to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2C above pre-industrial levels.

World leaders have stressed in recent years the need to limit global warming to 1.5C by the end of this century.
