WITH the cost of living ever-rising, many people are starting to realise just how much their weekly grocery shop is costing them.

Cost crisis gives shoppers food for thought

Money coach Kel Galavan says we pay for the food, pay for it to be stored in fridges and freezers and then we pay to dispose of it, so it's crucial to get our food shop right.

"When it comes to food waste, there are certain items that are more likely to be thrown out. About 50% of salads are put into the bin.

"Milk, dairy and bread are also likely to be thrown out," Kel, known as Mrs Smart Money, says.

Analysing food waste is important in order to save money, she adds. "According to the EPA, food waste costs households around €700 per year."

"It's very important to plan out your meals for the week in order to stick to a budget," Kel says.

"Make a list and stick to it. Ordering your groceries online and getting them delivered can actually save you money because it reduces the chance of impulse buying."

"Planning your meals around what is on offer can be a great way to save," she adds.

"Do one big shop in the store that will give you most of the stuff you need, like the big discounters [Aldi or Lidl].
