Student dies in US kayaking tragedy

Tributes to 'much cherished' Trinity girl Ella

AN Irish woman who died tragically in a kayaking accident in the US has been described as a “much cherished” student. 

Ella Mills, who attended Trinity, lost her life in the incident near Washington DC on Sunday while on a trip with Columbia University Whitewater Kayaking Club.

Montgomery County Fire Department said a piece of Ella’s clothing got caught on a rock and she “became trapped underwater for about 15 to 20 minutes” on the Potomac River.

First responders said several people tried to pull her out of the water but the current was too strong, US channel News 4 has reported.
