DO you remember the good old days of motoring - say a decade or so ago - when if you wanted to park your car you fed coins into a machine in return for a ticket to display on your dashboard?

Progress meant those machines became debit card enabled and you could tap and go. Within a couple of years we had automatic number plate recognition.

Now? Now it's all about the parking apps. And what pain in the piston they can be. For a start there are so many. It feels as if every car park I use requires me to download yet another.

Some are almost impenetrable to work out, too, especially if you're attempting to access them at night when there's just you and a vague air of menace in the multi-storey.
