New era for chess: Vidit fourth Indian in worlds quarters

NEW DELHI: Vidit Gujrathi played some solid chess on Monday to beat two-time World Championship challenger Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi 4-2 in tiebreaks and seal a spot in the Chess World Cup quarterfinals in Baku, Azerbaijan, giving India four spots in the quarters of the premier event for the first time
Gujrathi will be joined in the next round by his younger compatriots D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi.
Gujrathi and Nepomniachtchi - Nepo as he's known-ended their classical games in draws on Saturday and Sunday, with the contest moving into tiebreaks on Monday.
The two would play two rapid games of 25-minutes each, then two games of 10-minutes each if required, and if still indecisive, two blitz games.
