Borthwick and George are the perfect pairing to help England close the gap

JAMIE GEORGE’S powerful vulnerability and Steve Borthwick’s private charisma are enough to make Rory Best think England might just be onto something.
New England captain George cited former Ireland skipper Best as one of his leadership role models when taking the Red Rose armband.
The pair bonded on the 2017 Lions tour to New Zealand, and the ex- Ireland captain admitted being humbled by the recent acclaim from his former touring team-mate.
The 124-cap former Ireland hooker is ready to act as a sounding board for his friend, and even whispered the notion that new-look England can quickly find their feet.
The two-time Grand Slam winner sees no disrespect in affirming that Ireland are “miles ahead” of a rebuilding England, but cautioned that head coach Borthwick’s men need precious little time to close the gap.
Borthwick might not shine on public speaking duties, but Best revealed the Cumbrian boasts a behind-the scenes aura that typifies his leadership savvy. George’s candour after his mum Jane’s death underscored the Saracens hooker’s openness, leaving Best hailing an approach he expects will unite the England squad.
