Barely three months after letting a second Open crown was ripped from his grasp by Cameron Smith, the world No.2 saw his bid for Dunhill Links glory at the Old Course end in despair.
This time it was New Zealander Ryan Fox who shattered McIlroy's dream.
The Kiwi ace could even afford the luxury of dropping a shot at the Road Hole before a par at the last saw him claim his third DP World Tour title and the £730,000 top prize.
