1943 letter reveals PM Churchill knew the tide was turning against the Nazis

WINSTON Churchill was confident the Allies would "almost certainly" win the Second World War as early as 1943.

In a newly revealed letter to his beloved aunt Leonie Leslie, the Prime Minister said there had been a "steady march from mortal peril to what is almost certain victory".

He was clearly buoyed by victory in the North African campaign in May 1943 and the invasion of Sicily as the momentum swung in the Allies' favour.
