GERAINT THOMAS will bring the curtain down on a golden age for British cycling after flunking his Clint Eastwood audition - by failing to escape from Alcatraz without being spotted.

The Prince of Wheels - the last Brit to win the yellow jersey on the Tour de France back in 2018 - has announced 2025 will be his final year in the peloton.

Thomas, 38, will ride into the sunset on home soil in the Tour of Britain in September as one of the all-time greats who won double Olympic gold on the track in Beijing and London 2012 before conquering sport's ultimate test of endurance.

Known throughout the sport simply as 'G', Thomas consecrated his popularity among riders and roadside galleries alike by winning the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year (holding the SPOTY trophy with wife Sara, above) seven years ago.
