Israel and Hamas to pause 15-month conflict | Hope for hostages after deadlock broken

- CHRIS HUGHES

CEASEFIRE

THE historic ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas will pause a 15-month war that has destroyed Gaza and killed tens of thousands.

The breakthrough came after weeks of intense negotiations in Qatar's capital Doha and will mean the release of dozens of hostages held by Hamas in three phases.

Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel will be freed and, if peace holds, hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans will return to homes turned to rubble.

Vital aid will also pour into Gaza, amid fears of famine and more Palestinians dying from infected wounds and injuries.
